What Home Insurance Covers

Most homeowners think that getting a homeowners insurance policy is enough. Home owners, condominium owners and renters can choose a special type of home insurance. The most common problem however encountered by many people is not on choosing the right type but on choosing the adequate home owner insurance coverage. If you find yourself to be in the same boat, you’re probably one of those asking themselves “what home insurance covers?”

What home insurance covers? And what it does not? These questions are only felt when a home owner has already chosen his insurer and have already issued a check for his premium. When disaster strikes, that’s the time one realizes some perils are not covered by their policy.

Shockingly as it is, but it’s becoming more true these days. As premiums swell, home insurance providers are looking for ways to catch up with the losses and resort to face lifting their policies. Decades ago, protection for homes against mold damage could be covered by any home insurance policies. Check your policy, today, and see if it’s still covered.

The list of exclusions by many insurers kept mounting and you and your home’s risk are also rising. What used to be a comprehensive home insurance policy before could be reduced now. So, before you try on a new policy or before any thing worse happens make sure you know the answers to the questions “What home insurance covers? And what it doesn’t?”

Mold Damage – What’s Covered?

Over the past years, insurers have changed their policies regarding the claim of home owners from their home insurance coverage for damages caused by mold or leaking water pipes. This change was apparently seen after a sudden rise of insurance claims by many homes in Florida, Arizona, Nevada, California and Texas. In more than 25 states in America, government is allowing exclusion of mold damage by many insurers as well as the limiting of water damage protection. While it’s an issue of property maintenance, you should double check a policy for coverage of mold damage.

War And Terrorist Attack – What Are Covered?

In Type 2 of home insurance policies, protection from damages caused by civil commotion or riot is included. But ask any insurer about coverage for a terrorist attacks and planes hitting your homes, or nuclear mishaps, you sure will get blank faces. After the 9/11, only little was improved in home insurance policies regarding war, terrorism and nuclear accident inclusions as many insurers turned a deaf ear regarding these issues.

As a matter of fact, more and more home insurance providers have dropped inclusion of terrorism in home owners’ insurance coverage since the September 11 tragedy. To make homes more risky, South Dakota, North Dakota, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, Indiana, Idaho, Colorado and Arizona loosened on the exclusion of terrorism coverage on state-based home insurers.

Landslides – Is It Covered?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. Wildfire may most likely to be included in a policy, but not with landslides or other tectonic-related perils. Separate insurance policies can be obtained from such agencies as the California Earthquake Authority for earthquake prone California residences.

Dogs And Other Not-Covered Perils

Dogs that are tagged as deadly breeds such as Rottweiler and pit bulls make a policy more expensive. Unless you voluntarily exclude pets and are willing to pay for the damage yourself, your premiums will increase since the likelihood of getting damages from these potentially home-harmful animals are high. Intentional damages caused by children or rebelling teens are also not covered. If you can’t do away with your destructive kid, however, you can set up a home security system to get discounts.

Overall, if you are just about to buy a home owner insurance make sure you know the extent of the coverage. For those who already have, review your policy and purchase additional plans to cover for what’s not covered. Insurance can’t prevent fire or stop earthquakes from happening, but they do help rebuild a home.
